Find where the livestock guardian dogs are on Whympr
Encountering a patou, one of these large livestock guardian dogs, can be impressive - even a little intimidating.
To help you anticipate this kind of situation, Whympr offers a free map that lets you quickly spot the areas where patous are present in France and Switzerland.
It allows you to:
- adapt your route
- avoid certain areas if needed
- better coexist with pastoral activities
What source do we use?
In France, the data in Whympr is based on a map developed by the collective Pasto Kézako, in collaboration with the pastoral services of the Auvergne–Rhône-Alpes Pastoral Network.
The information is notably provided directly by shepherds, who report when and where they plan to be present with their flocks and their livestock guardian dogs during the season.
In Switzerland, the data covers grazing areas where patous may be present.

Community reports
Beyond the map used to locate patous, Whympr also offers a highly useful community reporting feature.
Rolled out in spring 2026, it allows users to share or view real-life conditions directly on trails and routes. These reports appear on the map and are visible to the entire community.
They cover:
🐄 Animals: herds, livestock guardian dogs, wildlife
🌳 Obstacles: fallen trees, flooded paths, snow, ice
🏔️ Mountain hazards: avalanches, rockfall, crevasses, cornices, seracs
🚧 Human activity: forestry work, hunting zones, litter
Each report remains visible for up to 90 days, as long as it is confirmed by the community.
A way to build useful information over an entire season — not just in real time.
